I'm Ingunn. This blog is about learning to make photos instead of just taking them. This is where I collect and express ideas and thoughts, and sometimes I might get sidetracked, too! There is so much to be learned. I have an urge for making life better, simpler and tastier. My picture galleries are in the sections travel and portfolio. I write in English, but I am Norwegian, and comments are most welcome in both languages.

Calendar season again

Last year I made a Christmas calendar with my iPhone, using the Hipstamatic-app. Every day I took a new photo and posted it to flickr and a blog. Today I made a blurb-book from these photos, and I plan to order a paper version in addition to the iPad-version I've already bought. No matter how cool I think the iPad and digital media are in general, the feel and look of a proper book still beats all that.

This year my calendar will be made tha same way, but I will ensure that the images have high enough resolution to provide larger prints, and I think I might post to Instagram instead this year. I'm not quite sure yet. If I do this many years in a row, it will become a series of moments, new and repetitive, all connected to my Christmas preparations. I like the idea of that!

Floating grassy islet

Definition of "islet": A very small island. Is this an islet, I wonder?

The pond near my house has several floating grassy islets in it, and I like to observe the small trees that grow on them. It's fascinating that even trees can grow there, and I wonder how long it will take before they are too top heavy and will turn over. As for now the tiny tree creatis its mirror image in the silent pond, standing still, waiting...

The image is from my first pond study shoot in September. At first I didn't like it all that much, but after some processing I like it better. The main difference was made by increasing the contrast.

(Details: ISO 200, 135mm, f/8, 1/200. Cropped square, processed in Aperture, Dfine, Viveza and Color Efex Pro.)

Project | Pond study, take two

I went back to the pond today to see if I could get any better captures than I already had. The aim was to capture the light, the mood, the colors of the place. I feel that today's best shot was this minimalist rendition of two straws bending towards the surface. It is late fall here, and the colors are fading quickly, most of the leaves are gone already. The pond feels empty and abandoned, waiting for frost to arrive. These straws are in their final stage, and yet they are bending over beautifully, creating mirror reflections in the wet surface.

I haven't done much post processing on this one, but I gave the colors and the contrast a little boost, and I darkened the edges a bit, too.

I've entered this picture in a challenge on the blog Wonderland. It is called Earth Wonders. Pop over to check out her interesting themes, changing every wednesday!

Project | Pond study October, take one

Time has come for the second take on my pond study project. After my serendipitous luck last time, with the brilliant light at the scene and all the attention my first photo attracted on flickr I realize that there is a fair chance of failure, or at least some disappointment this time. Yesterday I gave it a first try, but none of the images I produced exited me very much. I feel that I'm stuck in what happened last time, and that I tried to recreate that. Of course that was not very creative of me, so tomorrow I grant myself a second and last chance to make a better photo than the ones I have made so far this month.

My project is about the the feel, the changing light and the colors at the scene, so tomorrow I'll try to focus on this and this only. Maybe more close-ups this time if the light is flat? In what way are the colors different now from last month? These are the kind of questions I should try to answer.

If you have an advice for me, don't hesitate to share your comment!

Fall Break

During our Fall break we visited Trondheim and had a good time there with friends. While walking in the idyllic Lade area I saw this young couple from a distance and waited until they were in between the tall trees. The image is cropped rather heavily, and I've used a preset, a bi-color filter in Color Efex 4 and I also added a frame. I only had my 50mm with me, so no chance for zooming in!
